As a sportsman Prasanna Kumar played cricket and tennis right from his childhood. He was a member of the Andhra University Colleges cricket team that won the inter-collegiate championship for the Tirumurthi cup in 1955. He started paying tennis in 1952 at Hindu College Masuliptam and continues to play the game . Among the titles he won in veterans tennis were inter collegiate staff tournament doubles title, AU Faculty Club tennis singles and doubles titles, and veterans doubles titles in local tournaments. His career as radio broadcaster began in 1964 and and made his debut as tennis commentator for Davis Cup matches in 1965 at Vijayawada when India played against Vietnam. His last Davis Cup commentary was at Jaipur in 1995 when India beat Netherlands.He has given radio commentaries on ATP Challenger tournament at Chennai from 1997 to 2000 and other major tennis tournaments till 2003. As a cricket commentator he gave commentaries from 1965 to 2000 on Ranji, Duleep and Irani trophy tournaments and on the first one day international between India and New Zealand in 1988. He was a commentator on badminton at Asiad 82. He has written books and articles on tennis and cricket.
